Since attempting a more plant based diet, I have become obsessed with tofu. I researched how to make it taste better, and found that pressing the moisture out is key. A few friends suggested freezing the tofu and after defrosting that it would taste “meatier” but I am not fully convinced. So pressing is my new game.
Ingredients
1 lb package of firm or extra firm tofu, pressed
1 tsp garlic powder, paprika
½ tsp sea salt
2 tbsp lite soy or tamari sauce
1 tbsp sesame oil or hot chili oil
¼ cup cornstarch or for crunch, corn meal
Instructions
If you don’t have a press, use paper towels at the base of a dish, tofu on top, paper towels on that and a cast iron skillet on top. Press the tofu for 30 minutes to an hour. Cut the tofu in the size you want and add to medium dish. Mix the soy and sesame oil well, add the spices. Pour over the tofu, toss and marinate for at least an hour.
Toss the tofu in cornstarch or corn meal and coat thoroughly.
Preheat air fryer at 400 degrees for 5 minutes. Put tofu pieces in fryer basket, careful not to overcrowd so all sides can brown. Cook at 400 degrees for 5 minutes, open fryer and turn pieces over, then cook another 5 minutes. Allow to cool.
I used my tofu to add to an arugula salad and used Herdez Roasted Poblano Salsa Crema for the dressing. It was divine!
