April is Fair Housing Month #FairHousing

I bet you didn’t know that April is Fair Housing month, did you? Every April, the NAR – National Association of Realtors® – commemorates the passing of the Fair Housing Act in 1968.

It has become more important than ever for Realtors® to be aware of fair housing laws and to offer professional service to clients and customers. Last fall, I took my continuing education class and HUD violations were stressed as a part of the curriculum. It made so much sense in their examples, too. One may not be aware that a certain word or phrase may disenfranchise another person. Diversity includes fair housing, too.

Bias affects all Americans in not just homeownership. In everything we do and where we go and how we interact. Even the NAR added guidelines for guarding against hate speech.

Heard of implicit bias training? Maybe all Americans should take that class.
